Scouting Is Founded
Lord Robert Baden-Powell, a decorated British army officer, had long been fascinated by the outdoor skills of tracking, camping, and self-reliance. In August 1907 he ran an experimental camp for 22 boys on Brownsea Island to test the patrol method and his ideas for training youth.
The following year he published Scouting for Boys, one of the best-selling books in history. Almost by accident, Scout troops began springing up across Great Britain — and the Scouting movement was born.
